The data obtained on an OPTIMUS Gun can be downloaded onto your computer in the format of a comma seperated text file or csv file. The list will be made up of the scanned code comma quantity, with each item on a new line.

In order to be able to plug in and download data from the gun you must follow the steps detailed below:

  1. Install the OPTIMUS Software
  2. Find out the Gun COM Port
  3. Update the Settings
  4. Download Gun To File

Installing the OPTIMUS Software

Before the OPTIMUS Gun can be plugged in you need to install the OPTIMUS Software:

  1. Download the file entitled OPTIMUS, which is available here.
  2. Extract the zip file to your local hard drive and run the Setup.exe installation file.
  3. Follow the on screen instructions.
  4. Upon completion, follow the instructions found in the USB Quickstart.pdf document, available at the bottom of this article. This will instruct you on how to install the USB drivers and when to plug the gun in.

Finding out the Gun COM Port

To find out what the COM port the OPTIMUS Gun is using, look in the Ports section of Device Manager:

  1. Open System Properties via Start -> Control Panel -> System OR Right click on My Computer -> Properties
  2. Select the Hardware tab
  3. Click the Device Manager button
  4. Expand Ports (COM & LPT).
  5. Here you can see the COM port the OPTIMUS Gun USB to UART bridge is using.

Updating Settings

Settings.txt can either be found in the zip file entitled OPTIMUS (here) or at the bottom of this article.

Each time the OPTIMUS gun is plugged in, it can potentially change the COM port as this is allocated during the duration the gun is plugged in. See here to find out how to find the OPTIMUS Gun COM port.

For this reason you will need to check and update the Settings.txt COM port section each time the gun is plugged in:

  1. Open the Settings.txt file.
  2. Enter the COM port setting in the first line where it reads similar to the following: "COMM: 0 //0=Comm1 ,1=Comm2, .."
  3. N.B. The COM setting is not the same value as the COM port setting, is is always a value below the actual COM port value i.e. 0=Comm1 ,1=Comm2, 2=Comm3, 3=Comm4 etc
  4. Save and close the text file.
  5. Copy and Paste the text file into the %windir%\System32 directory, if not already editting the Settings.txt file here already. (%windir% refers to your Windows directory, usually C:\Windows).

Download Gun to file

Ensure that the Settings.txt file is up to date and is available in the %windir%\System32 directory (windir% refers to your Windows directory, usually C:\Windows).

SlyGunDownload.exe can either be found in the zip file entitled OPTIMUS (here) or at the bottom of this article.

Once the system is configured you can download the gun. To download the information from the gun to a file:

  1. Run SlyGunDownload.exe.
  2. Click the Download Gun To File button.
  3. Enter a filename and click Save.
  4. Select option number 4. Transmit data on the gun.
  5. Insert the gun into the cradle.
  6. The data will be uploaded and saved to the specified text file. The progress will be displayed in the SlyGunDownload.exe application.
